The KDS Gateway M7 space station opened it's hatches for business around the time the Drighton Terminous was first explored and colonized. The station was designed as a staging area for inbound colony ships and commercial traffic to the sector, allowing travelers to receive the most up to date travel information, coordinate travel plans, refuel from the long journey from the core and so on. It was the first stop to the sector - hence the name.

The station was constructed and operated by Lister Industries, a up and coming corporation looking to exploit the outer rim territories for a quick buck and get out quick. The operation ran smoothly for the first couple of years, until the CEO of Lister absconded with 3/4th of the companies annual earnings and disappeared mysteriously. The resulting investigation accidentally uncovered all kinds amoral double dealings in most of their other ventures. It wasn't shortly long after the Trade Federation investigative committee dragged all of Lister's dirty deeds into the open that the cooperation folded.

With a vested interest in keeping the station open, several planetary governments in the Drighton's Terminus banded together to acquire the station at the going out of business proceedings. This coalition of worlds quickly set up a third, disinterested party to govern the station before one side could use the facility to their benefit over the others. The relationship worked out well, and the Gateway station slowly became independent, evolving into the setup that it is today.

The station now serves as much a port of call for smugglers, diplomats, businessmen, entrepreneurs, and wanderers, as it does for inbond and outbound traffic. Several sectors of the station have been given over to the natives, both legitimate and otherwise. Some natives wish to live out their lives away from the prying eyes of others - governments and more unsavory people. Others are people who came Drighton's Terminus hoping to start a new life, or looking for work. When things didnt work out, often they couldnt afford passage home, leaving them stuck.

Everyone comes through Gateway station eventually.
