Jedi Knight Nara Damaris had always been a little strange - at least as far as Jedi go. All throughout her training, she had been more detail oriented than looking at the big picture. The teachers at the temples would always reprimand her for showing up late at her lessons because she's stop and smell the flowers or some such. Lack of focus, the teachers would say. Her mentors said she'd never get very far, the Masters foresaw a life of mediocrity for her.

Perhaps, as she sometimes insisted, that they had lost perspective.

Fortunately not everyone thought that way, and she found a master to apprentice under. Upon passing from Padawan to Knight, old habits remained. She tended to focus on the little day-to-day problems instead of getting caught up in the big galaxy shaking events. She tended to gets down and dirty with the common man - going down to the lower levels of Coruscant to right wrongs and that sort of thing. It was because of her involvement on lower levels, that Nara found Caton. She was heading home (because even Jedi cant be on the clock 24-7) via one of the mid level sky bus platforms, when she saw a young kid working the crowd. What surprised her even further was how strong the Force was with him. On impulse, she set herself up for the kid, to see how good he was. The Jedi council has their tests, she had hers.

Perhaps guided by the force - perhaps just bind luck, Caton lifted her saber. Nara easily managed to track the youth and his booty back to his apartment. There, at the hole in the wall he called home, Nara saw a lot of herself in the kid - persistent, resourceful, often a victim of bad circumstances - and able to do so much more if only a lucky break would come along. She decided to give the kid that break, convincing her to accompany her back to the temple.

The Council was reluctant to allow someone so old into the Jedi order - Caton was already pushing the envelope as it was at the age of five. The big chance almost passed by, but Nara went to the mat for Caton. She did everything she could to make the council see her way, finally promising to be as annoying as possible - within the guidelines, of course. Finally the council gave in - probably more to get Nara to go away than a willingness to bend the rules. End result - Caton got the break.

Due to her unorthodox beliefs, Nara tends to have an unorthodox training method. She employs a hands off method - Nara does train and oversee her young Padawan as much as necessary, but is more than willing to let Caton explore - and stumble, on his own. In her eyes, too much sheltering is far worse than the occasional blunder or accident could ever be. Although this training method leaves Caton alone - often for long periods, she strongly believes that his abilities and her faith will produce a powerful, practical Jedi in the end.
