Basically two variants on the course (the two maps above) – I’ll play with more but what I am trying to do is get the route to swing close enough to “major” cities near weekends that someone could join me for 3-4 days easily and start and finish in the same town, with my moving the course only a little. Right now the loop is planned so that each day is about 70 miles and has a fairly easy way to knock off about 15-20 miles, if someone is feeling toasted. The basic loop is:
Tuesday
August 17th, catch the Amtrak in the evening to Salem or to
Portland.
Wednesday
18th, ride to coast on highway – 80 mile day.
Thursday
19th, ride on 101 with detours into hills – 80 miles with dirt detours,
60 miles without. Camp in Florence.
Friday
20th, ride on 101 to just before Reedsport before riding up the
Smith River valley toward Eugene – 65 miles (if someone is going to join up on
Saturday in Eugene then I’d up my mileage to get closer to Eugene).
Saturday
21st 55 miles to Eugene – about 10 miles of dirt road.
Sunday
22nd – 80 miles out by Westfir and and up Osterhyde about 6 miles of
dirt.
Monday
23rd – 25 miles to Blue Lake or 65 miles to Eugene
Tuesday
24th 50 miles with real big hill and about 15 miles dirt/gravel to
camp past Sweet Home or if coming back from Eugene, then about 65 miles mostly
on pavement (2-3 miles on hardpack).
Wednesday
25th – 60 miles about ˝ dirt.
Thursday
26th 45 miles about 5 dirt to Detroit and probably Breitenbush.
Friday
27th 50 miles to Stayton
Saturday
28th 50 miles to Salem and Amtrak home or continue to Portland and
go home on Sunday.
