Abortion

This is a very emotional subject for many people. I fully understand the reasons why people argue as aggressively as they do on this subject and I can't deny I've gotten a bit angry at the anti-abortion extremists at times. I don't get angry because of the fact that they bomb abortion clinics or kill abortion doctors as much as I get angry on their insistance that everyone abide by the rules of their religion.

I do not consider a zygote to be a human being. It's a clump of developing cells that may very well become a human being if the host (mother) is willing to let it. Until it can survive without it being a physical part of the mother it is not an individual and has no rights whatsoever. Arguments that it would eventually grow to become a human are irrelevant. Every time a woman's egg goes unfertilized that could have grown to become a human. Every sperm a man produces has the potential to fertilize an egg that will grow to become human.

If you are still not convinced then it's likely you believe humans have souls and when you kill the unborn child you're destroying that soul's chance at life. If this is the case you need to realize that this whole idea about souls is YOUR religious opinion. Not everyone believes in the same things you do and you cannot expect people to live by the rules of your religion. Religious freedom does not mean you are free to impose your religion on others, it means others are free from you imposing your religion on them.

I was watching an episode of Town Meeting, a local talk show, where the subject was abortion. One girl stood up and admitted to having had an abortion, some jerk gets up in her face, very angry, and tells her that Jesus loves that baby! Had I been there I would have loved to jump up in HIS face and tell him that the pink lemmings from middle earth HATED that baby, and they hate him too! What is going through this guys head that makes him believe he's got the right to tell others what to do based on what he believes some omnipotent being would want?

I guess the last thing I would say to someone still not convinced there is nothing wrong with abortion is that if they are so concerned with giving unwanted babies a chance at life, why don't they adopt one of the many unwanted babies already out there? Instead of creating more unwanted, unloved orphans, why don't you make life better for some of the ones that already exist?
