• Church Brew Works - located on Liberty Avenue in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Built in the former St. John the Baptist Church. I love the way their web site begins, "And on the 8th day, man created beer." The brew tanks sit in the front in the alter area and the bar is in front of the former confessionals which now hold baseball hats, t-shirts and such for sale. The booths are pews cut to size. You have to check out the photos on their web site. There are four beers: Celestial Gold, Pipe Organ Pale Ale, Pious Monk Dunkel (my favorite which also is used in their Seven Onion Soup) and Bell Tower Brown Ale. They also have seasonal beers. The web site has a detailed description of their menu. I would recommend the buffalo as an appetizer. Church Brew Works is a great microbrewery and a great web site.

• Upland Brewing Company - The latest addition to the the beer world, the Upland Brewing Company of Bloomington, IN, opened its doors on Apr. 22 1998. Nestled in the Uplands of Southern Indiana, the 10000 sq. ft. facility produces fine ales which are available throughout Indiana in both bottles and kegs. The brewery, located at 350 W. 11th St. in downtown Bloomington (home of Indiana University), also contains a bar and restaurant serving entrees, deli-style sandwiches, vegetarian fare and fine wines. Patrons may view the brewery's activity through a spacious window in the restaurant. Tours are available. Created by Russ Levitt (who also designed and installed the Bloomington Brewing Company and was the brewer there for the first year) to fill the void created by the lack of fresh beer available on draft in Indiana.
