Fishing the Rivers of Oregon
Updated 27 Aug
Deschutes River, August 2001
It is happening on the Deschutes. Went down for a couple of days in the blazing heat. Won't tell you where but all over the place between the falls and the mouth there were fish. Said fish were eager to engage themselves on the end of line using greased line flies and DRIES. I talk to more people on the Deschutes who do not think the dry is a real presentation. They think some of us are just wacky and fish dries for our own entertainment. I may be a bit wacky(here come the email confirmations) and it does entertain me greatly but I have to tell you that the dry fly(waking) presentation is more than valid and the fish will verify this. Not only is it fun for you but it will make you a better fisher. With a waking dry you can see the effects of current and line control and will perfect you presentation. This perfection falls over onto your greased line and sunk fly presentations as well. The net result is you catch fish on dries AND you catch more fish on wets. Fish the DRY! An interesting point, even in the blazing sun I caught fish in the middle of the day on waking dries. When I got too hot I simple fell into the refreshing waters of the cool river, refreshed myself and continued. I think you should go. Make sure and behave yourself, I am experiencing more and more angling rudeness on the Deschutes. Maybe we can keep one river well mannered.
