Christopher Boscole learned early that taking lessons from a relative wasn't a good idea. "My mother was a popular piano teacher while I was growing up, but as you know, it's almost impossible to take lessons from someone that close." Boscole's early lessons were actually not on piano. "I took violin lessons first, then viola. I didn't take piano lessons until I was nearly 12," he said.
"My piano teacher was a very intense lady. The classical training I was receiving in her lessons was really at odds with the jazz and rock and roll music I was playing in the evenings throughout high school. Eventually I stopped formal music lessons and started developing my own style." Boscole discovered later, as a music student at the University of Washington, that his piano lessons had paid off in establishing a solid technique. It was also during this time that Boscole began composing and studied with renowned jazz bassist/composer Gary Peacock, who encouraged and mentored him in his own musical development. The academic career path led Boscole to teaching and graduate studies at the University of Miami where "everyone was immersed in the history, jazz traditions and shedding." After earning a Master of Music degree, Boscole focused again on pursuing his own style of original music. The University of Miami has many well-known alumni, among them Pat Metheny, Jaco Pastorius, and Bruce Hornsby. At 29, Boscole, a Seattle-area resident, stands poised with the release of Land Of Music to add his name to that list.
Land of Music is a refreshing, fluid ensemble recording showcasing his musical diversity. It is a reflection of his past experiences -- from gigs with Diane Schuur to traveling world-wide and performing rock and roll, jazz and new age music. Hard work and perseverance have characterized Boscole's musical career. They also help in his role as "Mr. Mom," caring for his two young children.
NEBULA Records, a division of Centaur Records, Inc. is proud to release Land of Music (NU 5013) by Christopher Boscole. Also available on Nebula is Shimmer: Solo Piano (NU 5003). Plans are in the works for an upcoming solo piano album celebrating the Christmas season as well as the re-release of a previous recording.
